A while back, it seemed a week wouldn’t pass without a query from a reader or subscriber about stock screeners. This quest was probably at its height just as many of the free stock-screening websites of the late 1990s were becoming either the extinct or fee-based stock-screening websites of the early 2000s.
There remain a number of quality online sources for traders and investors to use when looking to screen through hundreds or even thousands of stocks for those few that meet a key set of characteristics. What I always wondered, though, was why more standalone stock software — especially with the beginner and intermediate variety — did not include more robust stockscreening features. While a few software makers were doing this, I could not understand why it was not more widespread, particularly for software geared toward both retail traders and toward stock trading.
