A Conversation With Charles D. Kirkpatrick II, CMT by Leslie N. Masonson

Charles D. Kirkpatrick II, CMT is president of Kirkpatrick & Company, Inc., Kittery, Maine—a private technical analysis research firm that he founded in 1978. He was the publisher and editor of the Market Strategist newsletter until it ceased publication in October 2017. The newsletter provided portfolio baskets that successfully exceeded their benchmarks over many years.

His 50-year investment and trading career has encompassed writing, speak-ing, and educating those interested in how the markets work and in becoming successful investors. He co-authored with Julie Dahlquist
Technical Analysis: The Complete Resource For Financial Market Technicians, which is used as the core text for the Chartered Market Technician designation offered by the CMT Association (formerly known as the Market Technicians Association or MTA). He also authored two other technically oriented books in 2009 and 2014 with a heavy focus on the value of relative strength analysis (see the “Further reading” section at end).

Kirkpatrick has contributed articles to Barron’s and has been quoted in
Futures magazine, Forbes, Business Week, and The Wall Street Journal. He has been a guest on “Wall $treet Week” and CNBC as well as a speaker at numerous professional associations and organizations in the securities industry.

Kirkpatrick is the only two-time winner of the CMT’s prestigious Charles H. Dow Award in 1993 and 2001 for his technical analysis research, as well as the MTA Annual Award in 2008 for “outstanding contributions to the field of technical analysis,” and winner in 2012 of the Mike Epstein Award from the MTA Educational Foundation for “long-term sponsorship of technical analysis in academia.”

He was an adjunct professor of finance at Brandeis University International Business School, where he taught technical analysis. Kirkpatrick is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard College (AB), and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania (MBA). He is a past board member of the CMT Association; past editor of the CMT’s Journal Of Technical Analysis; past board member and vice president of the Market Technicians Association Educational Foundation; and a member of the American Association of Professional Technicians.

STOCKS & COMMODITIES Contributing Writer and ETF Columnist Leslie N. Masonson interviewed Charles D. Kirkpatrick II on January 17, 2020 via email to discuss his extensive career as an acclaimed technical analyst, market researcher, professor, and esteemed author.
