Interview: A Discussion with Robert W. Colby, CMT by Leslie N. Masonson

Robert W. Colby, CMT, is Chief Investment Officer at Robert W. Colby Asset Management, Inc., a Registered Investment Advisory (RIA) firm based in New York City. He has 50 years of professional experience in research, trading, and portfolio management at several large Wall Street firms. As an adjunct professor at both New York University and New York Institute of Finance, he developed and taught new courses on market timing for investors and on technical analysis for traders.

Colby is the author of
The Encyclopedia Of Technical Market Indicators (first edition 1988, second edition 2003), which is a standard reference on indicators and trading system design.

Currently, at his RIA firm, he uses technical analysis to actively manage several different portfolios of stocks and bonds, with the objective of producing positive absolute returns regardless of market conditions while taking controlled and low risks.

STOCKS & COMMODITIES Contributing Writer and ETF columnist Leslie N. Masonson interviewed Colby via email in early November 2019 to discuss his extensive career in technical analysis, research, rules-based trading strategies, and money management.

In your interview with STOCKS & COMMODITIES magazine in the December 2006 issue, you explained how your interest in the stock market began in the 1960s. Now, with 50 years of professional investment experience, I was wondering what you have found to be the most important principles of successful investing?
