Interview: A Technical Narrative With Mark Newton by Karl Montevirgen
Mark L. Newton has more than 25 years of buy-side and sell-side experience in financial services. Before moving to the New York City area in 2004, he traded equity options as a market maker and floor trader at the CBOE, and worked in risk management. He is a member of the CMT Association (formerly Market Technicians Association), and is a former member of the CBOE, CBOT, and PHLX exchanges. He obtained the CMT (Chartered Market Technician) designation in 2002.
In 2016, he founded an advisory firm, Newton Advisors LLC (NewtonAdvisor.com), which offers a consulting and web subscription service that seeks to provide actionable ideas to both financial professionals and retail investors based on proprietary technical analysis on equity indexes, ETFs, and sectors. The service also seeks to identify potentially profitable patterns in equities, commodities, currencies, and fixed income in the global markets. In addition to employing standard technical tools to identify trend duration, relative strength, and momentum, he utilizes countertrend analysis to identify potential trend exhaustion and trend reversals.
Previously, he was chief technical analyst for Greywolf Equity Partners; a technical analyst and portfolio manager for Diamondback Capital Management; and a technical strategist for Morgan Stanley. He appears frequently on CNBC’s The Closing Bell, BNN, and Fox Business News, and he contributes to Yahoo Finance.
S&C Contributor Karl Montevirgen spoke with Mark Newton on June 11, 2019 to ask him what steered him toward technical analysis and how that serves his investing clients, as well as to find out a little more about the person behind the media appearances.
Mark, tell us how you got started in the financial markets. More specifi-cally, how did you decide to specialize in technical analysis?
A lot of this started back in the mid-1980s ...
