Commodities market analyst, author, and passionate trader, Carley Garner has done her part in helping commodity traders understand the notorious nature of the futures markets. She is the author of Higher Probability Commodity Trading and A Trader’s First Book On Commodities. She’s one of the faces behind DeCarley Trading, a boutique futures and options broker based in Las Vegas, NV. She’s a regular contributor to this magazine through our Futures For You column, and to CNBC’s Mad Money TV show hosted by Jim Cramer. Over the years, Garner has come across retail traders from all different backgrounds, experience levels, and with different levels of risk capital. Working with them has given her a realistic and practical insight as to what drives them to success and failure.

How did you get interested in the financial markets and trading?
It didn’t happen right away. When you’re 18 you think you know what you want to do with your life. You pick a major and a college and go with it. But really, at that age, you honestly have no idea about yourself or life in general. When I was 18, I thought I wanted to be a physical therapist. So I started taking pre-med courses in college. But about three years into it, I decided that it wasn’t for me, since I didn’t like the contact with other people. It took me a long time to figure out that’s what that job’s all about.
