Q&A by Don Bright
WHAT GOOD ARE THEY?
Mr. Bright, I have been trading for a couple of years — not much, but mostly equities, which I know your firm specializes in. It seems that nearly every day there are economic numbers released by the government and other sources. The financial TV shows seem to expect everyone to know what these various releases are and how they should be viewed. I don’t mind saying that I really don’t know much about any of these supposedly big-news items. I can understand the unemployment rate, sort of, but they seem to discount even that when it appears to be improving. Would you be able to give me and other readers a short primer on some of these releases?
Glad to try to help out. I will say that you’re not the first, nor will you be the last, to be confused by all these indicators. And you might notice that many get revised a month later anyway, so, you might think, “What good are they?”
