Thomas Carr, or “Dr. Stoxx” as he is known, is the brains behind the Dr. Stoxx Trend Trading Toolkit, a MetaStock add-on. Carr’s website, www.drstoxx.com, offers daily stock and exchange traded fund (ETF) picks by subscription. Carr has had two books published, Trend Trading For A Living and Micro-Trend Trading For Daily Income. The former is written from the standpoint of multiday trading, while the latter is for intraday trading (that is, daytrading). Carr’s resume includes interviews by the Wall Street Journal, Investors Business Daily, and US News And World Report, and he holds a master’s and doctorate in philosophy from Oxford University in the UK. For 16 years he held an associate professorship at the University of Mount Union in Ohio. He is currently a full-time trader, trainer of traders, and fund manager. His company, Kingdom Capital, manages The 8.18 Fund.
Overview
Carr got interested in the equity markets in the early 1990s. His initial efforts focused on fundamental analysis, but he later began to include technical analysis. He spent time each day studying charts and building watchlists. He looks for candlestick patterns as well as bigger patterns such as flags, head & shoulders, and so on. The results of those efforts are captured in his book Trend Trading For A Living. In fact, the Dr. Stoxx add-on lets you mirror Carr’s process, except that the task of screening is automated via the add-on. Sometimes these screens will result in a dozen or more candidates. Dr. Stoxx filters those by using fundamental data.
