In his New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems (Copyright 1978) J. Welles Wilder Jr. introduced his directional movement system with the following:

The Directional Movement System as elaborated by Wilder requires the calculation of the following four expressions: +DI14,–DIl4, ADX, and ADXR. These expressions are defined as follows.
